The Social, Mobile, Data & Crowd (SMDC) Laboratory was founded in 2008 at the Department of Mathematical, Computer, and Physical Sciences of the University of Udine.

The laboratory’s research is primarily focused on Crowdsourcing, Natural Language Processing, evaluation of Information Retrieval systems, and other related areas. The laboratory has also addressed theoretical and practical aspects of Mobile, Pervasive, and Ubiquitous Computing.

Currently, the Social, Media, Data & Crowd laboratory consists of six professors, one research assistant, and one doctoral student.
